Earby businessman urges caution to online shoppers

PRLog (Press Release) – May 17, 2011 – IAN Scothern, the commercial director of Earby-based Harry Garlick, has urged people to be wary of online group-buying sites after the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) upheld a number of complaints about the Groupon website.

Banners on the Groupon site regularly advertise things such as discounted electrical goods, as well as cheap luxury items. Recent complaints have been upheld about banners on the site that promoted discounted items, but didn't allow consumers to buy them at advertised prices.

Ian Scothern, Commercial Director of Harry Garlick, said:"The group buying sites have been proven to have their limitations. Consumers should be cautious as the best deal isn't always the cheapest one. In this case, the best advertised prices didn't even turn out to be available!"

"When you are looking to make a significant purchase – such as a plasma screen TV or white-goods, like fridges and washing machines – you want the reassurance of an open, honest sales process; a friendly installation process that's completed on-time; and it's imperative that you get good after-care in case something goes wrong. At Harry Garlick, we know price is important and for that reason we're always prepared to do a deal that includes a good price, sound advice and great service"

Groupon, which works by offering bulk online discounts, blamed the problems on its German arm, which had created the ads. Similar complaints about the company have been upheld in the past by the ASA.
